Passkeys after losing your phone: how do you get access?
The plan depends on where the key is stored. Check the supplier, the second device and the emergency method before they are needed.
In this guide
Imagine that the phone with the passkey saved does not want to turn on. The new phone does not yet know any of your accounts. At this point, it is not the name of the function "passkey" but the location of the key storage and available alternatives.
There are two different problems here: recovering the account from the key manager provider and logging in to the service that passkey is concerned with. One may depend on the other, so it is worth dissolving these dependencies in advance.
Find out where passkey is
Check the password manager or system key store settings. Note the supplier's name and the account used to sync. Do not save secrets or drops containing recovery codes in a regular note.
If the key is synchronized, retrieving it usually requires access to the same provider and meeting its conditions. If it is connected to one device, syncing the account will not create a copy of it on the new equipment.
The hardware key is a good example of the second situation: as long as you have it and the service recognizes it, it can be used to log on another computer. Losing the only such key requires an alternative.
Add an independent entry path
Open valid account settings and check the available methods. This may be a second passkey saved elsewhere, separately registered hardware key or service recovery procedure.
Backup codes are not available in each service and do not always replace all required components. Check what exactly allows you to recover. Do not assume that the email address itself is sufficient to disable security.
Practical test: Imagine the simultaneous loss of your phone and SIM card. If each entry route requires SMS to this number or confirmation on the lost device, you need an additional method.
Test the plan without logging everything out
Leave the session open. In the second window or on your second device, start a new login and select a backup method. Check if it works without the help of the first phone.
The login by the QR code confirmed on the first phone shows that the phone can still authenticate you. Doesn't prove you're going to be on the account after he's lost. It's a common trap during an apparent backup test.
What to do after the device is stolen?
Use another trusted device to lock or mark your phone as lost if the provider makes it available. Then check the sessions and login methods in the most important accounts. Remove access to the lost equipment according to the service manual.
Just delete passkey in one manager does not have to remove active sessions or all copies. Also check the list of keys on the website page. If access has already disappeared, start official recovery; there is no universal way around this process.
